Nil exposure (also known as light random or light finish) is a beautiful, highly desired concrete polish finish where the least possible exposure of the aggregate is sought. To achieve this, we grind the least amount of concrete possible so that there's no stone showing through the surface, and then we grout the floor to fill in any pin holes and cracks. Finally, we polish the surface to your desired level of shine.
Nil exposure is generally hard to achieve, as it depends on the quality of the slab. This finish is typically offered only on new slabs poured to meet stringent specifications, so that there's no undulations throughout the floor where aggregate could show through.
If you desire a perfect nil exposure finish for your concrete floor, the slab must be flat and highly burnished, with multiple passes with a high powered trowel. The concreter responsible for the slab must ensure there's no footprints or screed marks in the surface. The finish can be achieved with excellent consistency of aggregate density, if the slab is poured by an experienced concreter who understands the finish required.
